At the beginning of the walkway there are these amazing little Māori sculptures to greet you. This introduction shows that the locals are very proud of their culture and gives the visitor a chance to appreciate it as well.
The peninsula is worth every effort to see. Never have you seen the ocean look so blue and mossy, as if it is bursting from the seams with life. The snow-capped mountains in the distance oddly contrast with the forest green that accentuates the peninsula.
Funny part about this hike: I am not sure when or where we went wrong, but somehow the group I was walking with made a wrong turn and we ended up getting separated from the rest of the group. As we wandered along, we found ourselves surrounded by resting fur seals in a pristine beach area. It looked to me like this was an area where scientists studied them in close proximity because they didn’t seem phased by a group of humans strolling so close to them. In the end, I’m really happy about the detour because I got to interact with a fur seal very closely.
The Kaikoura Penninsula Walkway is the perfect hike for an unforgettable view of the ocean and surrounding mountain sides.
